PROJECT "Thesis on Beneficial Fungus Application Research"

My career in research and the application of sustainable solutions in the agricultural sector is focused on enhancing the productive and environmental capacities of tropical crops, with a particular emphasis on cocoa. My experience stems from an intensive study conducted during my training as an Environmental Engineer at the Universidad Centroamericana, where I evaluated the potential of ten isolates of the fungus Trichoderma spp as plant growth promoters, using maize as a model crop.

The approach of my research involved applying different strains of Trichoderma spp to maize seeds under controlled conditions to observe and measure their impact on various growth variables. An entirely randomized experimental design was established with ten treatments and a control, applying the strains at the time of sowing and in later stages of plant development. The variables evaluated included disease incidence, germination percentage, emergence speed, leaf length, coleoptile height, root length, diameter, and dry matter.

 Highlighted Results

The results were impressive. They demonstrated that Trichoderma spp can significantly promote root growth and plant biomass, compared to a control group that received no treatment. The Trichoderma strains not only improved germination and the development of maize seedlings but also reduced disease incidence, highlighting their potential as biocontrol agents and biostimulants. In particular, it was observed that at least one of the treatments with Trichoderma spp outperformed the control in each of the evaluated variables, indicating its capacity to improve overall plant health and productivity.
